Mani stone on old wall of Muktinath

This picture taken in May 2002 shows part of the old wall. On the top of the wall there are many, sometimes very small stones as well as 'Mani' stones, which are stones carved with the Buddhist mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum". These are placed on top of the wall by Tibetan Buddhists whilst doing Cora, which is the practice of walking clockwise around a pilgrimage site while focusing on visualizations and mantras, thus unifying one's body, speech and mind. Every time the practitioner has finished one round, he or she puts a stone on top of the wall as encouragement for him or herself and others to follow this ancient practice.
